Submission to the Inquiry into the relationship between domestic, family and sexual violence and suicide

Highlighting the need for further research and improved data collection.

Read our response to the Inquiry into the relationship between domestic, family and sexual violence (DFSV) and suicide.

Our submission highlights the need for more research to understand how this issue impacts migrant and refugee women and gender diverse people.

The link between DSFV and the risk of suicide

Around the world, domestic, family and sexual violence (DFSV) is linked to suicide risk among women. DSFV is a preventable risk factor associated with dying by suicide. However, there is very little evidence about how this issue impacts migrant and refugee people in Australia.

Furthermore, data collected about suicide and migrant and refugee people is not consistent across Australia. Consequently, there is a gap in our understanding.

Based on what we do know, a tailored approach to addressing DSFV and suicide risk among migrant and refugee women and gender diverse people is needed.

In addition, improving pathways to inclusive services, and investing in community-led violence prevention reduces suicide risk in migrant and refugee communities.
