Setting the Compass

Setting the Compass Project
The Setting the Compass: Building Capacity for Advocacy on Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Issues Project seeks to build capacity of national women’s NGOs, and of immigrant and refugee women, to conduct targeted and informed advocacy using the Advocacy Toolkit (5.31MB)which was developed in the Points of Departure project. The Setting the Compass project will build knowledge and capacity by engaging national women’s NGOs, and by developing and conducting training programs with immigrant and refugee women across Australia on the effective use of the Advocacy Toolkit in their particular context.

National Advocacy Training of Bilingual Women
Between September and November 2010, advocacy skills development sessions targeting bilingual women were conducted in each State and Territory. Altogether 122 women from different language backgrounds participated in the sessions. Participants are expected to pass on skills gained at these sessions to fellow women in their communities in the women’s preferred languages.
This is what some participants had to say about the training:

“This session was a springboard to access information” (Hobart participant)

Most appreciated all the resources provided. This shows your level
of commitment to women from culturally and linguistically
diverse backgrounds” (Canberra participant)
