Health Promotion and Research Project Officer
Megan Wong BA

Since starting work as a Health Promotion and Research Project Officer at MCWH in August 2011, I have been responsible for two projects.

The Sharing Our Stories Project aims to raise awareness about human rights at both an international and domestic level and increase the capacity of immigrant and refugee women to take action if they are faced with human rights violations. The Project is based on the Woman to Woman Approach-MCWH's peer education model which acknowledges that women sharing health information and experiences is the best way to wellbeing.

My other project, Baby Plus 2 is an initiative of the Whitehorse Community Health Service that aims to build the capacity within the Box Hill Birralee Maternity Service to provide culturally appropriate services and programs to Chinese women during their transition to first time parenthood.

I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Chinese language (Monash University) and am currently studying for a Postgraduate Diploma in International Development (La Trobe University), with a particular interest in gender, sexuality and development.

Throughout high school I lived in Beijing for six years and recently returned there to complete an intensive Chinese language course at Peking University. During this time, I volunteered as a grant application editor at the NGO Beijing Cultural Development Centre for Rural Women which seeks to promote the social development of China's rural women, particularly those who migrate from the countryside to the city. Through my three years' experience volunteering with migrant and refugee communities in both China and Australia, I have been continuously inspired by the women I have worked with, who like me, are dedicated to social change.

I am honoured to work with a group of diverse and passionate women and hope my work at MCWH will contribute to improving health in immigrant and refugee women.
