Multilingual Library Coordinator
Carmela Pitt

‘Women’s Health Information in Your Language!’ As Multilingual Library Coordinator I contribute to this MCWH goal—of providing immigrant and refugee women with information access and equity—in many ways.

I coordinate the Multilingual Library and Resource Collections which house 12,000 resources in almost 70 languages. Our Educators and other staff, those interested in immigrant and refugee women’s health and wellbeing, and most importantly women themselves all utilise our resources.

A key area of my work is the development of information. This means finding resources both locally and globally. It also means encouraging a growing number of organisations to join with us to create information that acknowledges immigrant and refugee women, their health and wellbeing needs, and their right to information required to assist make informed decisions.

I grew up in Melbourne in a very multicultural community, sharing experiences of trying to fit into a society that both challenged our values at home and opened a window of opportunity. This experience formed my passionate belief that knowledge is powerful and all women should have equal access to it. This remains my belief and informs my work. I have been working at MCWH since 1996.
