Elizabeth Mazeyko
Bilingual Health Educator
Language(s): Spanish
I come from Uruguay, South America. My professional background has been in community work since 1980 and as a Bilingual Health Educator from 1990.
I am employed by the Multilingual Centre for Women’s Health (MCWH) as a Bilingual Health Educator (BHE). My role is to provide multilingual health information sessions to immigrant and refugee women from different backgrounds regardless of what country they are from. This unique multicultural program provides information about health in general and how the health system in Australia is different from other countries.
When running information sessions in Spanish, I always make sure that I create a safe and
non-threatening environment for women to discuss any women’s health issues in a sensitive and culturally appropriate way. This includes respecting different values, and political and religious backgrounds.
The most rewarding aspect of working as a BHE is knowing we make a difference in immigrant and refugee women’s lives by empowering them to make informed decisions about their own bodies and health.
I have a Diploma in Therapeutic Massage (All Regions Massage School Melbourne) and have also completed a wide range of studies regarding complementary therapies. I also completed a course as a Grief Counsellor with the Centre for Grief Education.
